Rob Parfrey – Social Worker
Rob is Ascension’s first full-time, permanent Social Worker. He is one year into a two year contract with the Ascension Island Government.
What’s the best thing about your job?
The best part of my job is being the first full time practitioner to work here, building relationships with the community. Being able to provide direct support and positive reinforcement of the role. The opportunity to introduce new thinking and processes into the Safeguarding of the community.
What are you proudest of achieving in your job?
Being the first permanent Social Worker, I am pleased with the positive relationships I have built within the organisations and communities to inform and advise on Safeguarding issues and providing direct welfare support and advice.
What are the challenges of your job?
Ascension is a working island and can be a challenging environment to work in. Some of Ascension’s laws don’t easily fit within a more mainstream society that has a welfare system and can be in contrast with social work values. I’ve set myself the task to challenge these local norms and advocate for the best outcomes for individuals within these tight parameters.
What do you like about living and working on Ascension?
It is a truly unique environment with a stunning if rugged beauty. The community here is a very welcoming one and the multi-agency support from professional partners makes my task much easier.
I enjoy the outdoors and Ascension’s natural habitat is very conducive to this mindset – dependent on your levels of fitness and adventurousness!
