Eating, Drinking & Shopping
Where to eat?
There are several snack bars and fast food outlets on Ascension. The Saints Club, Two Boats Club and NAAFI are open for morning snacks and lunches, the US Base Snack Bar at the Volcano Club is open most evenings serving American-style fast food and is very popular with visitors and locals alike. There is an excellent restaurant at the Obsidian Hotel in Georgetown that caters mainly for hotel guests but anyone can book a table for dinner by calling the Obsidian reception by noon that day.
While you’re on Ascension, it is essential that you try some of the local Saint Helenian cuisine. Delicious tuna fishcakes and other locally caught and prepared fish is often sold from Two Boats Club or the Saints Club, and occasionally they sell other “Saint” dishes such as pilau rice (or Plo as it is known locally) – a spicy curry based dish.
Having a Drink
As it is so hot on Ascension, it’s often nice to relax in one of the island’s bars with a cool, refreshing drink.
The Saints Club is the busier of the two bars in Georgetown – come here to have a drink or snacks and play the usual bar games. Georgetown’s other bar, The Anchor Inn at the Obsidian Hotel is smaller and quieter and is a lovely place to spend a relaxing evening out.
Two Boats Club, as the names suggests, is the club in Two Boats Village. Again, the usual pub games can be enjoyed here, in a relaxing and friendly atmosphere. The climate is cooler here than in Georgetown and the outdoor bar benefits from the refreshing breeze coming off Green Mountain which looms behind.
Shopping facilities are limited on Ascension. There are a few shops that sell everyday essentials and groceries – Solomon’s in Georgetown and the NAAFI at Travellers Hill. There are a few gift shops in Georgetown (A&P’s Gift World, and the Obsidian Gift Shop) where you can pick up a few Ascension souvenirs. Several retail outlets are located on the ground floor of the Exiles Building in Georgetown.
